At first glance the Sony SAL-50F18 50mm f/1.8 DT Autofocus Lens looks like a standard prime lens, but being a DT lens designed to cover Sony APS-C sized chips, it should correctly be perceived as a short telephoto lens. Its cost, design, and overall size all lead the tyro to comfortably accessorize their kit lens, and begin developing a library of optics for their camera. I bealive that the new lens will of great quality as Sony put a lot of efford into their digital SLR camera merket. SLRGEAR.COM review bottomline:"While the lens is just slightly soft at ƒ/1.8, it's no more soft than its contemporaries from other manufacturers, and when stopped down to ƒ/2.8 it provides sharp images indeed."
